Country Road Take Me/Us Home

Daily Mileage= 349;Trip Total=11,807
We left Nashville this morning and stopped at Lynchburg,TN to visit the Jack Daniels Distillery. This distillery has been around for over 150 years and is the oldest distillery in the United States. It was really neat but no samples of Jack because the distillery is in a dry county. In fact there are several dry counties in the area so you can't buy it really anywhere near the place.

However, the tour was quite informative and we loved the fact that you can buy your own barrel and get a special "one barrel" whiskey for about $3,000 plus taxes. (maybe for Christmas!)
We stopped at Lynchburg "downtown" which is right out of Mayberry. We ate at the "Red Caboose" had a pulled pork sandwich and moved onto Atlanta. Here's Rich in a heavy game of checkers! I think the other guy won!!

We ended our final night away with a wonderful home cooked dinner at Brian & Andrea's home in Atlanta. This is the way we started out so it seems fitting that we should wind down this way. We are now getting as excited about coming home as we were going to all the wonderful places we've been to. And of course, we are looking forward to sleeping in our own bed!

Here they are with their very cute house!!!

Tomorrow's blog will sum up our trip with our Top 10 List. See you on the blog. Good night, Love&Joy, Mare&Rich

Did they say anything about the spring drying up from which they get the H2O to make the Jack?? (Then it would really be a dry county! Yikes!) One of Dave's friends said he heard that Jack's days may be numbered?? I hope not - it's still my favorite bourbon - ahhh, so smooth!!!!!!!!

Linny - of Jack & Ginger!

Hey Lin,

Thought about you when we were there. You're probably the only one I know who's a real Jack person!

The spring is flowing like it will never end and they say it won't. Apparently there are a number of springs in the area but they get enough rain to keep it moving. They show you the orginal spot of the spring and when we were there it was flowing into a pretty good size stream and rivere. It flows all around the propery which is big!
He had started his distillery way before prohibition and it did stop making bourbon during that time. Then when this became the real Bible belt, TN along with other southern states came up with all kinds of bizarre laws about alcohol. So even though the overall "moral" feeling is against drinking, the Jack Daniels Distillery (who employs 400 employees out in the middle of no where) will probably live on.

They told us that this year they became the No 1 boubon company in the world. They are increasing their production capacity so if they're on their way out, it didn't look like it.

One other interesting bit that I forgot to mention is that there have only been 6 "bourbon masters" or whatever they call the head guy/taster/maker. They verbally pass down the secrets to making their bourbon so no one else knows how to do it.

I'd like to try the single barrel or filtered twice Jack but I'll have to buy down here somewhere because as I said, they didn't have for sale there!

I did get a bottle that was available there (there's only one size and it's especially made for them to sell only there). It's the same regular Jack Daniels but it has a commemorative bottle.

Talk to you soon,
Love,
Mare
